The synergy between plants, soil and its micro-organisms mechanically filters the wastewater and eliminates or binds organic and non-organic solubles from it.

Water processing installations based on wetland plants are not only suitable for purifying lesser polluted municipal wastewater but also for heavily polluted industrial and commercial wastewater. Depending on the purification method, about 2-5 m² water surface are need per population equivalent.

Plant-based water purification systems are divided into three basic types: water-covered plant beds, horizontally or vertically perfused plant beds.
